Tesla is getting ready to show its long-awaited next-generation Roadster sports car. Elon Musk says the new electric sports car will be unveiled on October 1, 2026.
Musk shared the date on X, writing, “New Tesla Roadster Unveil 10.01.” Tesla also posted a graphic with the words “Go for launch,” pointing to the same date.
The second-generation Roadster was first shown back in 2017. Tesla originally planned to start deliveries in 2020, but the car has faced several delays over the years.
The new Roadster is expected to be a high-performance electric car with all-wheel drive. The earlier version was claimed to reach 100 km/h in just 1.9 seconds and featured a retractable glass roof.
There could also be a much bigger surprise this time. Reports say Tesla and SpaceX have been working on a cold-gas thruster system for a special version of the Roadster. The system could give the car an unusual boost and may even allow it to lift off the ground for short periods.
The Information reported that a demonstration could take place at a SpaceX test facility in McGregor, Texas.
The Roadster's design may also be very different from the prototype shown in 2017. Reports suggest Tesla has abandoned the old design and is working on a completely new version. The car could become a carbon-fiber hypercar rather than simply being a fast electric sports car.
Even with the October unveiling, buyers may have to wait longer. Musk has previously said that production could begin 12 to 18 months after the major reveal.
The Roadster announcement comes as Tesla continues to focus on new vehicle projects, including its Cybercab robotaxi. The company recently started offering limited rides in the two-seat vehicle in Austin, Texas.
After nearly nine years of delays, all eyes will now be on Tesla to see what the new Roadster actually looks like and whether it can live up to Musk's ambitious promises.
