Katie Zacharia will join as spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary. McLaughlin ended her message by saying she is ready for the next fight.
Her departure comes as public support for Trump’s tough immigration policies is dropping, according to new polls.
During her time at DHS, McLaughlin defended the administration’s strict rules and often spoke for the president’s immigration stance. She also led communications during moments when DHS statements were questioned, especially after violent clashes involving federal immigration officers.
