DHS Spokesperson Steps Down During Immigration Crackdown

Tricia McLaughlin announced she is stepping down from her DHS role. She shared the news on social media. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised her for her hard work and strong commitment. A DHS official said she had been thinking about leaving since December.

In her post, McLaughlin thanked President Trump, Secretary Noem, and the American people for the chance to serve. She said she was proud of her team and what they achieved.

She also announced new leadership updates. Lauren Bis, who has worked with her since the Trump administration's first day, will take over as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. Katie Zacharia will join as spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary. McLaughlin ended her message by saying she is ready for the next fight.

Her departure comes as public support for Trump’s tough immigration policies is dropping, according to new polls.

During her time at DHS, McLaughlin defended the administration’s strict rules and often spoke for the president’s immigration stance. She also led communications during moments when DHS statements were questioned, especially after violent clashes involving federal immigration officers.

She confirmed again that Lauren Bis will take over the top communications job. Katie Zacharia will join the team as well. These changes were earlier reported by Reuters.

Recent Reuters/Ipsos polls show support for Trump’s immigration policies is at its lowest point since he returned to the White House. This comes after a series of incidents involving federal agents, including fatal shootings in Minneapolis. Two U.S. citizens died during enforcement operations, leading to protests and fresh criticism.

Secretary Kristi Noem faced backlash after calling one of the deadly incidents “domestic terrorism.” Critics said there was no proof for that claim.

The situation has also turned political. House Democrats have started impeachment efforts against Noem. They accuse her of hurting public trust, blocking oversight, and using her power wrongly during the immigration crackdown.

The rising violence, mixed official statements, and falling public trust show how the immigration plan—once a major part of the administration—has now become a big point of anger and debate nationwide.
