Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is known for his tough political style and strong opinions. During a recent conversation with CBS News correspondent Robert Costa, Emanuel spoke about President Donald Trump, the Democratic Party, progressive politicians, Israel, antisemitism and the future of America.
Emanuel, 66, has spent many years in American politics. He served as Chicago mayor, a member of Congress, U.S. ambassador to Japan and a senior adviser to two Democratic presidents. He was also chief of staff to President Barack Obama.
Today, Emanuel is trying to push the Democratic Party toward the political center. He believes Democrats have a better chance of winning elections if they focus on everyday economic problems instead of moving too far to the left.
Emanuel's criticism of the Democratic left
Emanuel has become a strong critic of progressive Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders. Sanders and his supporters argue that traditional Democratic leaders have failed to understand the economic struggles facing ordinary Americans.
Sanders recently criticized people such as Emanuel, saying many voters are tired of the old Democratic establishment.
Emanuel strongly disagrees with this approach. He says Democrats should focus on winning elections in Republican areas instead of simply trying to make already Democratic districts more progressive.
He argues that if Democrats want to raise wages and pass other policies, they need to win support from voters who do not normally vote for Democrats.
Emanuel also rejects some major progressive ideas. He said he does not support defunding the police or open borders. He believes progressive activists and the Democratic Party establishment have important differences that should not be ignored.
His message is simple: Democrats need to appeal to a wider group of voters.
Strong criticism of Trump
Although Emanuel is critical of the Democratic left, he is also sharply critical of President Trump.
He has accused Trump's administration of corruption and questionable business dealings. Emanuel believes Democrats should focus their attacks on issues that directly affect American families.
Instead of making every political argument about ideology, he wants Democrats to talk about the cost of living.
He used several examples to make his point. Emanuel criticized Trump's plans for expensive projects and luxury items while many Americans are struggling to pay for basic needs.
His argument is that voters should not have to pay for what he sees as unnecessary spending by the president while facing higher prices themselves.
Emanuel believes this could become a powerful political message for Democrats if they take control of Congress.
Rather than simply calling for Trump's impeachment, Emanuel wants Democrats to explain how Trump's policies and decisions affect ordinary people.
A different view on Israel
Emanuel also spoke about the difficult debate over Israel and the war in the Middle East.
As a Jewish American, he has strong personal connections to Israel. However, he has also openly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
During a visit to Tel Aviv, Emanuel argued that Israel needs to find a long-term path toward peace. He said any future agreement should protect Israeli security while also respecting Palestinian dignity.
His position is different from both some strong supporters of Netanyahu and some voices on the American left.
Emanuel believes the United States can support Israel while also demanding changes from the Israeli government.
He warned that Israel cannot continue fighting forever without a political solution. In his view, lasting security will require a path toward peace.
Concern about antisemitism
Emanuel is also worried about the rise of antisemitism in the United States.
He said people do not have to agree with the Israeli government to be concerned about attacks against Jewish people.
At the same time, he warned against anti-Muslim attitudes and other forms of hatred.
For Emanuel, political disagreement should never become an excuse for violence.
His concerns are also deeply personal. Some members of his family were killed during pogroms and the Holocaust in Europe. His family history helped shape his belief that people have a responsibility to protect others from hatred and violence.
He said his faith gives him a moral guide, but he believes the larger challenge facing Americans is a loss of faith in the country itself.
Emanuel's message about America
One of the strongest parts of Emanuel's message is his concern about America's confidence.
He believes Americans have become divided and discouraged. In his view, the country has lost some of its courage and belief in its own future.
Emanuel does not think the answer is for Democrats or Republicans to completely defeat the other side.
Instead, he believes Americans need to rebuild confidence in their country and work on problems that affect everyone.
That includes the economy, public safety, political division and the rising cost of everyday life.
Could Emanuel run for president?
Emanuel has also been appearing in early primary states, including New Hampshire. He recently took part in a low-key bicycle tour and met ordinary voters.
That has naturally led to questions about whether he could run for president.
Emanuel laughed when asked whether he wanted to announce a campaign during his interview. He made clear that he was not announcing a presidential campaign.
Still, he did not completely close the door on a future run.
He said he wants to give everything he has to public service. He described America as a great country and said being an American is like winning the lottery of life.
For Emanuel, politics is not only about winning an election. He believes public leaders have a responsibility to make people's lives better.
A centrist message in a divided America
Rahm Emanuel's political message is clear. He wants Democrats to move away from some of the strongest progressive ideas and concentrate on winning support from moderate and independent voters.
At the same time, he wants Democrats to challenge Trump strongly over corruption, government spending and the cost of living.
His approach may not satisfy everyone. Progressives may argue that the Democratic establishment has failed to address economic inequality. Republicans, meanwhile, are likely to reject Emanuel's criticism of Trump.
But Emanuel believes Democrats cannot win America by speaking only to people who already agree with them.
His larger argument is that political parties need to reach beyond their own supporters. For him, the future of America depends not only on defeating political opponents but also on rebuilding trust, confidence and a sense of shared responsibility.
At 66, Emanuel says he is ready to keep fighting for the country he loves. Whether that fight eventually leads to another political campaign remains uncertain. What is clear is that he still has strong opinions about where America and the Democratic Party should go next.
