Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace”, a global body aimed at resolving long-running conflicts and overseeing post-war governance and reconstruction in Gaza, the Kremlin said on Monday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the invitation had been delivered through diplomatic channels, adding that Moscow is now reviewing the proposal and seeking further clarification from Washington.
“President Putin has received an invitation to join this Board of Peace,” Peskov told reporters, including AFP. “At the moment, we are studying all the details of this proposal and hope to have contacts with the American side to clarify all the nuances.”
He did not say whether the Russian leader was inclined to accept the offer.
US-led initiative for global conflict resolution
According to Russian officials, the Board of Peace is a US-backed initiative designed to address complex international crises, with a particular focus on Gaza’s future governance and reconstruction following months of conflict.
The body is expected to be chaired by President Trump himself. Reports suggest the White House has approached dozens of political figures and global leaders to participate, with around 60 countries believed to have received invitations. Permanent membership, according to the same reports, would be offered to states willing to contribute significant financial support.
The White House has not yet released a detailed public outline of the board’s structure or mandate.
Russia’s Middle East balancing act
Moscow has long sought to maintain working relationships with all major players in the Middle East, including Israel and Palestinian representatives, positioning itself as a potential mediator in regional disputes.
Last October, Putin publicly praised Trump’s efforts to address entrenched global conflicts, suggesting that progress in the Middle East could mark a turning point.
“He is really doing a lot to resolve these complex crises, which have lasted for years, even decades,” Putin said at the time. Referring to Gaza, he added that success in such efforts would be “a historic event.”
Global reactions and next steps
Several international leaders are also reported to have been invited to the Board of Peace. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is among those named, and on Monday he voiced support for Washington’s role in pushing forward the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire.
“We welcome President Trump’s focus on sustaining the ceasefire in Gaza and moving on to phase two,” Starmer said, adding that the UK was open to engaging constructively in the process.
For now, the Kremlin says Russia’s participation remains under consideration, with further talks expected as Moscow and Washington discuss the scope and conditions of the proposed role.
