President Donald Trump dropped a political bombshell on Wednesday. In a fiery Truth Social post, he announced a full and unconditional pardon for Texas Democrat Henry Cuellar, who has been fighting a federal indictment over bribery and money laundering.
Cuellar, one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, won his 11th term in 2024 even as prosecutors accused him and his wife, Imelda, of taking about $600,000 in bribes from a firm linked to the Azerbaijani government and a Mexico City–based bank. Investigators say the payments were funneled through shell companies tied to his wife.
Trump used the moment to blast Democrats, accusing them of weaponizing the justice system and targeting political opponents. Then he delivered his headline-making announcement:
He said he was pardoning Henry and Imelda Cuellar “fully and unconditionally,” adding, “Henry, I don’t know you, but you can sleep well tonight — your nightmare is finally over.”
The indictment last May left Cuellar politically exposed despite his long career, which began with eight terms in the Texas House before his move to Congress in 2004. Trump’s sudden intervention now wipes the charges away and sends shockwaves through both parties as Washington braces for the fallout.
