Trump Pushes for New Commanders Stadium to Carry His Name
The push to name the Washington Commanders’ upcoming D.C.
stadium after President Donald Trump has moved from rumor to a real
possibility.
According to reporting from ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and
Adam Schefter, Trump wants the franchise to put his name on the new venue. This
idea floated around while political negotiations were underway to lock down the
stadium deal, and it didn’t come out of nowhere. Trump had already urged the
team to immediately restore its old name, so a stadium name could be
seen as a middle-ground compromise.
The White House isn’t trying to hide it either. Press
secretary Karoline Leavitt told ESPN that naming the stadium after Trump “would
be a beautiful name,” adding that he was the one who helped push the project
forward. Another source inside the White House said the naming “will probably
happen.”
If the Commanders go along with it, they’ll be giving up
something big: money. Under their agreement with D.C., the team keeps all
naming-rights revenue. Normally, that means collecting millions each year from
a major corporation eager to slap its brand on the building. Naming it after
Trump means walking away from that cash.
The timing is interesting. Trump is expected to attend the
team’s Week 10 home game against Detroit, which only adds fuel to the
conversation.
So now the nation’s capital is juggling stadium branding
politics while the Commanders prepare to face the Lions — all during the
fallout of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
This naming fight isn’t just about a stadium. It’s about power, symbolism, and the growing overlap between sports and politics.
