Deadly Blast Near Delhi’s Red Fort Leaves Eight Dead, Sparks Nationwide Security Alert

A busy Monday evening in Old Delhi turned into chaos after a car exploded near the historic Red Fort, killing at least eight people and injuring around 20 others. The blast happened just before 7pm near the Red Fort metro station—a part of the city that’s always packed with commuters, tourists, and roadside vendors.

Police say a slow-moving vehicle had stopped at a red light when it suddenly blew apart, sending flames and debris across the congested street. Several nearby cars and auto-rickshaws caught fire as people ran for safety. Fire crews and ambulances rushed in within minutes, battling flames and helping the injured.

Visuals on local news channels showed a car with its doors blown off, charred vehicles lined across the road, and mangled bodies scattered on the ground. “We heard a huge sound, and our windows shook,” one resident told NDTV, describing the terrifying moment.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed the death toll and said the area was being secured and monitored closely. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and officials say all possibilities are being examined. Home minister Amit Shah also stated that security agencies are treating the incident with utmost seriousness.

The blast has not only shaken the capital but triggered wider alarm across India. Mumbai was placed on high alert soon after the incident, while Uttar Pradesh authorities ordered tighter security at religious sites and sensitive districts along the border.

The Red Fort—known as Lal Qila—is one of India’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 17th century, it draws thousands of visitors daily and serves as the backdrop for the prime minister’s Independence Day address every August 15. Its location in the tightly packed lanes of Old Delhi means any incident nearby can quickly spiral into a major emergency.

As investigators comb through the wreckage to determine what caused the explosion, the city remains tense. Officials have promised regular updates as they work to piece together what happened and why.
