Elton John Reveals He Has Lost His Sight
Elton John has shared that he is still unable to see, months after suffering a serious eye infection.
During a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical in London on Sunday, John expressed gratitude towards his husband, David Furnish, calling him "my rock."
“I haven’t been able to attend many of the previews because, as you know, I’ve lost my eyesight. It’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded great tonight,” John told the audience.
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, John revealed how his vision problem has impacted his ability to work.
“I unfortunately lost the sight in my right eye in July due to an infection I had in the south of France. It’s been four months now since I’ve been unable to see, and my left eye isn’t in great shape either,” he explained. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but I’m stuck at the moment. I can do things like interviews, but going into the studio to record is a challenge since I can’t even see the lyrics.”
The 77-year-old musician first publicly addressed his sight issue in September on Instagram, revealing that he had been “dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye.”
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before my vision returns to the affected eye,” he wrote, thanking his doctors, nurses, and family for their support. “I’ve been quietly recuperating at home this summer and feel positive about the progress I’ve made in my recovery so far.”
Though John retired from touring in 2023 after a long and successful career, he composed the music for The Devil Wears Prada musical. The production is based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, which was also adapted into a popular 2006 film.
