U.S. Sends 100 Troops to Israel to Operate Advanced Anti-Missile System Amid Rising Tensions

The United States plans to deploy around 100 troops to Israel to operate an advanced anti-missile system known as the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), the Pentagon announced. This deployment follows Iranian attacks on Israel in April and October, and aims to strengthen Israel's air defenses. Previously, the THAAD system was sent to Israel in 2019 for exercises, but the current deployment of U.S. troops highlights escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The Pentagon emphasized the system's role in defending against ballistic missiles and preventing further escalation if Israel retaliates against Iran.

Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, confirmed that sending the THAAD battery to the Middle East is not unprecedented. However, this instance of deploying U.S. forces to Israel is significant, given the current geopolitical situation. The number of U.S. troops dispatched is typical for operating such a defense system, although it is uncommon to see them stationed within Israel.

The THAAD is designed to counter ballistic missile threats, helping Israel prepare for potential Iranian responses to any future conflicts. The United States has advised Israel on its potential course of action following the recent attack by Iran on October 1. U.S. officials have urged Israel to avoid targeting Iranian nuclear or oil facilities and have emphasized that any Israeli retaliation should be "proportional," as President Biden conveyed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their recent conversation — the first in nearly two months.

The U.S. military presence in the Middle East has grown significantly since October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel. Since then, the U.S. has expanded its air defense network across the region and positioned more warships and aircraft carriers in strategic locations such as the eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea. Additional troops have also been stationed in Cyprus for potential evacuation planning, showcasing the increased vigilance and readiness of the U.S. forces amidst the ongoing regional tensions.

In light of these developments, the deployment of the THAAD system is another move to fortify Israel’s defenses, underscoring the U.S. commitment to supporting its ally. The Pentagon’s actions reflect broader efforts to stabilize the region while maintaining a strategic presence in the Middle East.
